CHIP: Who’s eligible

Who can sign up for CHIP?

All children in Pennsylvania are eligible for CHIP if they meet the following requirements:

  • Under 19 years of age
  • A U.S. citizen, U.S. national or qualified alien
  • A resident of Pennsylvania
  • Uninsured and not eligible for Medical Assistance

How long can my child be on CHIP?

Your child can be covered by CHIP until they turn 19, regardless of household income or employment status. You don't have to fill out a medical questionnaire and there are no limits on coverage for pre-existing conditions

I’m losing my job, can I get CHIP for my child?

Yes, your child may qualify for CHIP regardless of your household income or employment status.

Are there income limits for CHIP?

  • Immunizations
  • Annual checkups
  • Diagnostic testing and lab work
  • Prescription drugs
  • Dental care
  • Vision care
  • Hearing care
  • Emergency care
  • Outpatient surgery
  • Inpatient hospital stays
  • Mental health
  • Substance abuse programs
  • Home health care
  • Rehabilitation therapy
Is there coverage for children with special needs?

Yes, the CHIP Health and Wellness Support Program helps children with serious medical conditions and special health care needs get the care they need. Some serious medical conditions automatically qualify a child for Medicaid.

Is my child’s pre-existing condition covered?

There aren't any pre-existing condition limits to qualify for CHIP.

Is substance abuse help covered?

Yes, substance abuse services are covered under CHIP.

When does my coverage start?

CHIP coverage usually begins on the first day of the next month after you enroll.

For example: If you enroll on April 15, your coverage will begin on May 1.

What are the dates and deadlines to enroll in CHIP?

You can enroll in CHIP anytime throughout the year. 

How do I renew my CHIP coverage?

Each year, you will receive a renewal reminder in the mail from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS).  You will be able to submit your renewal in several ways:

  • Online at dhs.pa.gov/COMPASS
  • Over the phone by calling 1-866-550-4355 Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or by
  • Mail, fax, or dropping it off in person to your local CAO

If you have difficulty completing your renewal or providing the required documents by the due date, contact the Statewide Customer Service Center at 1-877-395-8930 Monday – Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m; For Philadelphia: 215-560-7226
