CHIP: Who’s eligible

All children in Pennsylvania are eligible for CHIP if they meet the following requirements:

  • Under 19 years of age
  • A U.S. citizen, U.S. national or qualified alien
  • A resident of Pennsylvania
  • Uninsured and not eligible for Medical Assistance

Your child can be covered by CHIP until they turn 19, regardless of household income or employment status. You don't have to fill out a medical questionnaire, and there are no limits on coverage for pre-existing conditions.

  • Hearing care
  • Emergency care
  • Outpatient surgery
  • Inpatient hospital stays
  • Mental health
  • Substance abuse programs
  • Home health care
  • Rehabilitation therapy

Yes, the CHIP Health and Wellness Support Program helps children with serious medical conditions and special health care needs get the care they need. Some serious medical conditions automatically qualify a child for Medicaid.

There aren't any pre-existing condition limits to qualify for CHIP.

Yes, substance abuse services are covered under CHIP.

CHIP coverage usually begins on the first day of the next month after you enroll.

For example: If you enroll on April 15, your coverage will begin on May 1.

CHIP: Getting enrolled

You can enroll in CHIP anytime throughout the year. 

Each year, you will receive a renewal reminder in the mail from your state's Department of Human Services (DHS).  You will be able to submit your renewal in several ways:

  • Online using a state CHIP website
  • Over the phone by calling the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596. TTY users can call 1-855-889-4325.  Call Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or by
  • Mail, fax, or dropping it off in person to your local CAO

If you have difficulty completing your renewal or providing the required documents by the due date, contact your state's CHIP office.
