Geisinger and Highmark Health conclude five-year joint venture

  • Joint venture achieves goal of expanding access to affordable, high-value care in Clinton, Lycoming, Sullivan and Tioga counties

Danville and Pittsburgh, Pa. (May 3, 2024) — Geisinger and Highmark Health today announced the conclusion of their joint venture as the goals the organizations established five years ago have been accomplished.

In March 2019, the two organizations announced a clinical joint venture to improve access to necessary primary care, specialty care and appropriate acute inpatient care in north-central Pennsylvania.

Specifically, the joint venture led to the construction of new facilities in Lock Haven and Muncy Township near Williamsport. A two-story facility in Lock Haven opened in March 2021 and offers a walk-in urgent care center, primary care offices, imaging and lab services, specialty clinics, surgery and women's health services.

A 120,000-square foot, three-story Muncy Township facility opened in January 2022 and includes an emergency room, special care unit, surgical suites and primary and specialty care areas.

With the end of the joint venture, the Lock Haven and Muncy Township facilities are now wholly owned and operated by Geisinger.

"We appreciate and thank Highmark Health for the pivotal role it played in our ability to expand access to these much-needed clinical services," said Tammy Anderer, chief administrative officer of Geisinger's north-central region. "There has been an overwhelming response from the community, which has benefited from more accessible care that aligns with our mission to make better health easier."

The joint venture also expanded services to existing Geisinger Clinics in Clinton, Lycoming, Sullivan and Tioga counties.

"We entered this joint venture because we are committed to expanding access to care in the communities we serve," said Kate Musler, senior vice president and COO, Highmark Health Plan. "We are pleased to say that the joint venture achieved that goal in north-central Pennsylvania, and we thank Geisinger for their collaboration throughout the last five years."
