October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a great time to schedule your mammogram.

Cancer can be treated and cured when discovered at an early stage. That's why the National Cancer Institute recommends women receive a mammogram every year starting at the age of 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, a mammogram should be administered earlier at your physician's recommendation.

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that is used to look for breast cancer. It is an important test for early detection because it can find tumors that are too small for you or your doctor to feel. There are several types of mammograms.

  • Standard mammogram: Image of the breast on film.
  • Digital mammogram: Image of the breast on an electronic file. This allows the doctor to see different views of the breast without taking more images.
  • 3-D mammogram: Image of the breast using digital mammogram three-dimensional technology. This allows the doctor to see breast tissue very clearly and from different angles.
