Highmark earns high quality rating from CMS for Pennsylvania Medicare Advantage plans

PITTSBURGH (Nov. 28, 2016) — Highmark's Medicare Advantage plans in Pennsylvania have achieved a 4.5 quality rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This is the second year in a row that Highmark earned a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.

Medicare Advantage Plans are evaluated on a scale of one to five. In arriving at the overall annual quality rating, CMS takes into account how well health plans score in five different categories including (1) keeping members healthy and up-to-date on preventive care measures, (2) managing chronic health conditions, (3) member responsiveness (4) handling problems and complaints, and (5) customer service.

"At Highmark, we use the Star evaluation criteria as one of our own internal checks on how well we are delivering an excellent member experience in addition to high quality care," said Debbie Smith, Senior Vice President of Senior Markets at Highmark. "Whenever we uncover a gap in care for our members, or determine we can improve on a particular measure, we take immediate action. It's rewarding to see our commitment to placing members in the center of all that we do pay off in improved health outcomes and CMS recognition of the value we bring."

Highmark covers 514,000 seniors in a broad portfolio of Medicare Advantage products. Unlike traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans limit the amount of out-of-pocket contribution a beneficiary is required to make. In addition to covering the same hospital and medical services as Medicare Parts A & B, Highmark Medicare Advantage plans include benefits for preventive care, hearing aids, vision and dental care, and popular fitness memberships.

Highmark is currently enrolling Medicare-eligible individuals for 2017. The annual election period began October 15 and runs through December 7, 2016.
