2020 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community now virtual with online fundraising

PITTSBURGH (March 30, 2020) — Highmark Inc. announced today that the 2020 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community that brings thousands of walkers together to raise funds for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations has been modified to be a virtual walk coupled with an online fundraising option due to the ongoing COVID-19 virus situation.

"Highmark's first priority is the health and safety of our community members, walkers, and numerous volunteers that make this event so successful each year," said Evan Frazier, senior vice president of community affairs, Highmark Health. "While this year's Walk for a Healthy Community throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware will be online and virtual, this approach provides the 273 local nonprofit health and human service organizations a way to safely participate and still raise funds to support their mission."

Online registration for the virtual walk is now open. Walkers can register and donate at the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community website, and select the participating nonprofit of their choice. Participants can take their first virtual steps anytime they like between May 9 – June 30, by walking on a treadmill, in a park or simply around their neighborhood.

The Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community, held annually throughout the region since 2003, has helped organizations collectively raise more than $15.1 million. Last year, nonprofits raised more than $1.417 million in Pittsburgh, Laurel Highlands, Erie, Harrisburg, Lehigh Valley, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Wilmington, Delaware.
