Preventive vs. Diagnostic Care

Preventive care aims to identify problems early, while diagnostic care treats an existing symptom or problem. Both types of care can occur during the same visit. For example, when your doctor notices something during a routine checkup (preventive) and orders additional tests (diagnostic).

Here are some examples of the preventive checkups and tests covered under your plan.

Preventive Care**


Your routine checkup (at no cost to you*):

  • Annual Preventive Wellness Visit
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Weight and blood pressure screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Mammogram, MRI, or ultrasound for preventive screening
  • Screening Pap test
  • Colorectal cancer screening
  • Tetanus, flu, and booster shots

Diagnostic Care


Lab work and other tests (may pay more out-of-pocket):

  • Complete blood panel
  • Vitamin D, thyroid, and hormone screening
  • Urine test
  • Diagnostic imaging tests
  • EKG

  • Preventive Services are located under Benefits > Medical.
  • Search in-network care by clicking on Get Care and going to Find a Health Care Provider.
  • Some procedures depend on specific factors. You and your doctor can determine what's best for you.

Cost-Saving Tips

If you're worried about paying for diagnostic care, there are a few things you can do to keep an eye on costs.

  • Specify the type of visit when setting up your annual wellness exam.
  • Have your preventive schedule handy so you and your doctor know what services are covered.
  • Ask your doctor if the blood work or labs ordered are preventive care.
  • Use in-network facilities for blood work and imaging.
