Highmark sponsors "Meet Dr. Right" event at Erie Health + Wellness Pavilion Sept. 20

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 8, 2017) — According to a study by Dartmouth University, patients who utilize a primary care physician (PCP) have lower death rates for cancer, heart disease and stroke, have fewer hospitalizations, and spend less on health care, among other benefits. PCPs also help patients with chronic diseases, such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease control complications before they become a more serious and costly problem.

Recognizing these benefits, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is teaming up with Allegheny Health Network (AHN) to offer a free "Meet Dr. Right" event on Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Erie Health + Wellness Pavilion located at 4247 West Ridge Road. Parking for this event is free.

Earlier this year, Highmark announced a $115 million multi-phased capital investment plan for AHN's Saint Vincent Hospital, which will enhance the hospital's capabilities, expand its capacity to meet the evolving health needs of the community, and facilitate a patient-centered care model focused on quality, convenience and service excellence.

The initial phase of the Saint Vincent investment plan began with a groundbreaking in May for construction of a new emergency department and a state-of-the-art operating room suite.

The Meet Dr. Right event continues Highmark's commitment to the area, and provides attendees with the opportunity to meet, mingle, and make appointments with PCPs and other health care professionals from AHN and other community practices.

Practitioners scheduled to attend the Sept. 20 event include PCPs, pediatricians, cardiologists, surgeons, and other medical specialists from AHN and the nearby community who are accepting new patients.

"A PCP should serve as your partner in health and be a trusted medical confidant, someone who knows you and understands your unique medical history," said Charles DeShazer, M.D., chief medical officer for Highmark. "That's why we provide these free Meet Dr. Right events — to help individuals meet and get to know the right doctor, someone who can help better coordinate your care."

Attendees can also take advantage of free health screenings and meet with health-related vendors offering services locally. Free refreshments will also be served.

Individuals interested in attending the free event should visit www.meet-dr-right.com or call 1-855-856-0319 to register in advance. A list of participating physicians and information about each doctor is also available on www.meet-dr-right.com.
