Distinguished "West Virginian Award" presented to J. Fred Earley

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (Nov. 17, 2016) — Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia announced today that former president J. Fred Earley II has been awarded the Distinguished West Virginian Award by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. The Distinguished West Virginian award, the highest civilian honor that the Governor can bestow upon a native West Virginian, was presented to Earley during Monday's Board of Directors meeting by Del. Brent Boggs on behalf of Governor Tomblin. The company also read aloud a formal resolution expressing its sincere appreciation for his dedication and commitment to the corporation and its mission.

"For nearly three decades, J. Fred Earley II has diligently worked for the public good as a key leader in West Virginia's business community. Through his dedicated service to Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia and its predecessors, Mr. Earley has made significant contributions to the success of the company and its mission of providing customers with access to affordable, high quality health insurance coverage and to increasing the availability of health coverage throughout the state" said Highmark West Virginia's Board of Directors through its resolution. "Mr. Earley leaves Highmark West Virginia in a financially strong state, in a strong market position and as one of the state's most respected employers and businesses. Fred will be missed but will remain a part of our history and legacy of service to our members and to the State of West Virginia."

Employed with Highmark West Virginia, Inc., (formally known as Mountain State Blue Cross Blue Shield) since 1989, Fred Earley served the corporation in various capacities including as Vice President, Managed Care; Senior Vice President, External Operations; Corporate Compliance Officer; General Counsel and Corporate Secretary; and, since July 1, 2009, until Nov. 1, 2016, as President and a member of the Board of Directors of Highmark West Virginia, Inc. and President of Highmark Senior Solutions.

Earley currently serves or has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, West Virginia Health Information Network, the Parkersburg Area Roundtable, the Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg, and the Parkersburg YMCA. He is a native West Virginian who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from West Virginia University and a law degree from The Washington and Lee University School of Law. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar.
