Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield supports University of Scranton's Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center Clinic for the Uninsured

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (April 11, 2016) — Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield recently provided financial support to the University of Scranton's Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center Clinic for the Uninsured to help the center deliver needed medical services to local under and uninsured individuals.

Opened in 2007, the University of Scranton's Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center Clinic for the Uninsured is a free clinic offering primary health care, physical therapy and counseling services to uninsured residents of Lackawanna County.

The Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center Clinic for the Uninsured will use a $7,500 grant from Highmark to purchase immunizations, medical supplies, and pharmaceuticals to help patients prevent and manage chronic health conditions, minor illnesses, and acute infections. With the financial support of this grant the staff, health professionals and student volunteers from the Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center Clinic for the Uninsured expect to administer over 100 immunizations and dispense approximately 600 prescription medications over the coming year.

"Highmark is pleased to support the Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center Clinic for the Uninsured and the great work they do," said Susan S. Hubley, director of Community Affairs. "We share the same mission of providing access to care to vulnerable populations, and this grant will help hundreds of local residents get the care they need to help manage and prevent costly medical conditions."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that individuals with one or more chronic condition — such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity — account for 86 percent of all health care spending in the U.S., Hubley added.
