West Virginia Family Health awarded Accredited status by National Quality Organization

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (Sept. 10, 2015) — West Virginia Family Health (WVFH) has received national recognition for the quality of its Medicaid HMO product, as the plan was recently awarded Accredited status by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

The NCQA Health Plan Accreditation evaluates the quality of health care that health plans provide to their members. The evaluation includes metrics measuring how well a health plan manages all parts of its delivery system — physicians, hospitals, other providers and administrative services — in order to continuously improve the quality of care and services provided to its members.

"This recognition by NCQA is very significant. NCQA is widely known as having the most rigorous and thorough program that evaluates health plans," said Fred Earley, president of WVFH and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia. "This says to our members that WVFH's operations are strong and that WVFH spends a great deal of time and effort to ensure quality and safety are top priorities."

NCQA's evaluation of WVFH focused on a number of critical operational areas including: quality management and improvement, utilization management, credentialing, member rights and responsibilities, member connections and Medicaid benefits and services.

"Health plans with NCQA accreditation generally outperform plans that do not have such recognition," said Earley. "These health plans demonstrate that they provide evidence-based care, make efficient use of resources, have high levels of customer satisfaction and deliver improved health outcomes."

This was the first NCQA survey for the plan, with the status capped at "Accredited" until HEDIS® and CAHPS® results have been collected and reported to NCQA.
