PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (Aug. 26, 2015) Today, the League of American Bicyclists recognized Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia with a Bronze-Level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFBSM) award, inducting the company into a cutting-edge group of more than 1,050 local businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies in 47 states and Washington, D.C., that are transforming the American workplace.
"As part of our commitment to improve the health and wellness of the communities we serve, Highmark believes it's important to encourage a more welcoming atmosphere for employees, customers and community members who choose to use their bicycles as a mode of transportation," said Highmark West Virginia President Fred Earley. "Not only is bicycling one of the most environmentally friendly commuting options, but it's also a great way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine."
Highmark West Virginia provides its employees with amenities such as on-site locker rooms with showers; maintenance supplies, including tools, pumps and tubes; and free access to select fitness centers with indoor biking equipment and cycling classes to encourage their use of bikes for transportation. A bike rack is also available at Highmark West Virginia's Parkersburg office for employee and public use.
As a result of today's recognition, Highmark West Virginia will also have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance provided by the League to become even more bicycle-friendly.
"The business community's investment in bicycling is playing a central role in making the country a safer, happier, and more sustainable place to live and work," said Amelia Neptune, League Bicycle Friendly Business program manager. "We applaud this new round of businesses, including Highmark West Virginia, for leading the charge in creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone."
Highmark's corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh was also recently recertified by the League of American Bicyclists as a Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Business for its efforts to make it easy for employees to combine health and exercise with their daily commute to work while supporting a more environmentally friendly transportation option.
