PITTSBURGH (June 24, 2015) — Highmark Inc. and United Concordia Dental are proud to announce that they will serve as a Platinum sponsor for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, which begin this Sunday, June 21 in Dallas, Texas, and run through Friday, June 26. More than 500 veteran wheelchair athletes are expected to compete in this year's Games.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to continue to strengthen our partnership with the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, an outstanding sports and rehabilitation program supporting American veterans," said Highmark Vice President of Government Affairs Mike Warfel. "At Highmark and United Concordia our aim is to improve the health and well-being of individuals in the communities we serve. Through support of events like the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, we are able to maintain that commitment."

In addition to serving as a Platinum sponsor, Highmark and United Concordia Dental will also serve as an event host sponsor for the nine ball competition.

"Each year hundreds of veterans with disabilities benefit from participating in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games," said Al Kovach, national president of Paralyzed Veterans of America. "We thank Highmark and United Concordia Dental for helping to make this important rehabilitative event possible with their support."

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games, presented annually by Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Department of Veterans Affairs, are open to all U.S. military veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition as a result of spinal cord injury, certain neurological conditions, amputations or other mobility impairments, and who receive care at VA medical facilities or military treatment centers.

Veterans at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games will compete in 18 events: air guns, archery, basketball, boccia, bowling, field, handcycling, a motorized wheelchair rally, nine ball, power soccer, quad rugby, slalom, softball, swimming, table tennis, track, trapshooting and weightlifting. This year's Wheelchair Games will also feature a rowing exhibition. Athletes compete in all events against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience or age.
