Preventive care helps you avoid serious illness. It's the first, most important step when it comes to good health.
That's why we encourage you to get wellness exams, preventive screenings or contact a Highmark health coach. In addition, Highmark's outreach nurses call members who may need extra care. It's 100 percent covered through most Highmark plans.
Health coaches can help you stop smoking, lose weight, get fit, reduce stress, get more sleep and manage anxiety, depression or chronic pain. They can work with you and your doctor as well as Highmark's own team of physicians, pharmacists, social workers and dietitians.
Our health coaches can be a guiding hand to help you every step of the way. And that's just what Debbie needed when she lost weight to reduce her health risks.
Debbie, Highmark Member: "I've seen the same doctor for well over 20 years. We talked about my weight as we had done every year. She said, well, you're getting to a point to where it's going to get very, very unhealthy for you. Her last words to me were, I want to see less of you next year. She said you want to be around for your grandson. And that kind of, you know, got me there because I do want to be, you know, around for him."
Fact: More than 2/3 of adults struggle with weight.
Fact: Being heavy can lead to serious health problems.
Fact: Losing weight takes motivation.
Jamie, Highmark Health Coach: "Here's a woman who has battled with her weight...not really sure where she wanted to start or where she needed to start. Finally, this time it clicked with her. I could tell she was ready for this. I mean she was prepared. And she was adamant and determined to make it happen."
Fact: Highmark offers personal health coaching.
Debbie, Highmark Member: "So I purchased a treadmill. I also thought it would be fun, I wanted a cute bicycle to ride, an old-fashioned bicycle. And I remember Jamie telling me, you've done that already?"
Fact: Health coaches help set positive goals.
Jamie, Highmark Health Coach: "I always tried to have her break it down a little bit, like let's just focus on losing it in a healthy manner, one to two pounds per week. And she was receptive."
Debbie, Highmark Member: "So there's all those little things that Jamie has talked me through that I would not have figured out on my own. The people that said, what kind of diet are you on? And I told them I'm not on a diet, I have changed the way that I eat. So I have lost 41 pounds in about eight months. I am trying to lose 75 pounds and I'm over half way there now. Now I can enjoy my grandson in a way that I wasn't able to do when he was born."
Debbie, Highmark Member to grandson: "Can I have another kissy?"
Jamie, Highmark Health Coach: "In a way I know that I've helped her, it was pretty exciting. It was pretty special."
Jamie, Highmark Health Coach to Debbie, Highmark member: "Hello, it's so nice to meet you!"
Debbie, Highmark Member: "To have that connection, to be able to do it in person and give her a hug...(crying)"
Debbie, Highmark Member to Jamie, Highmark Health Coach: "It's been such a life changer for me. I thank you so much."
Jamie, Highmark Health Coach to Debbie, Highmark member: "Aww, you're welcome."
Jamie, Highmark Health Coach: "She's doing it. And she's doing it in the right way and it's paying off, big-time."
Our members who seek expert advice from health coaches are living proof that teamwork can tip the balance toward better health.
Cortne's story is just one example. Her screening results showed she was headed toward a life with diabetes. But when she connected with her health coach, she found the support she needed to make positive changes. She lost weight and lowered her blood sugar into the normal range. Now, she's on a path toward a healthier life.

Sometimes you don't know where to turn or that you have resources available through Highmark. That's why our nurses call members who may be in need of extra care. You may hear from them if you have just been diagnosed with a serious disease or chronic condition such as cancer or diabetes, or if you have just been discharged from the hospital. You can get the care you need to improve your health when you work with our outreach nurses.
You've heard it before. And it's true. Early detection saves lives.
From cancer to heart disease, if a problem is caught early it can be treated more easily and with better results. Review the preventive guidelines for your age and gender on your member website to see what screenings you may need.
When many cancers are caught early, the survival rate is 90 percent. Yet studies show that one in three people are late in getting screened for cancer. Schedule your screening today.
If you have a loved one who needs a screening, visit our cancer nudge site. You'll find all the tools you need to deliver subtle (and not-so-subtle) nudges.
With guidelines and resources, our nudge site is also a good place to start if you're not sure what you need.
One out of every three adults has prediabetes, and 90 percent of them don't even know it. If you watched Cortne's story you know. It is possible to bring high blood sugar levels back to normal when they are caught early.

Heart failure puts more people over the age of 65 in the hospital than any other condition.
And did you know it's the number one cause of death in young women? A simple cholesterol test can let you know if your heart is at risk.
Too often people wait to get help until a mental health situation is very serious. If you think you or a loved one may need help, don't hesitate. Schedule an appointment with a mental health specialist. Or call a Highmark health coach at 1-888-258-3428.
