F.G. Chip Merkel

F.G. "Chip" Merkel, serves as Executive Vice President, Diversified Businesses for Highmark Health Plan. In this role, he leads diverse teams at Highmark Health Plan, United Concordia Companies, Inc. and HM Insurance Group to help grow membership, market share and healthier communities; maintain profitability and enhance revenue; streamline operating processes and costs; and build a positive and responsive culture focused on the customer.

At Highmark Health Plan, Chip is responsible for leading the National Accounts, Delaware, and West Virginia markets to ensure growth, and operational and financial effectiveness, while increasing brand value. He helps develop strategy, managing distribution channels, building strong consultant/broker relationships and ensuring client retention.

For United Concordia Dental, a Highmark Health Plan diversified business with more than 8.5 million members, Chip serves as CEO and chairman of the board, providing direction and leadership to United Concordia's officers and executives and acting as a liaison between the board and management. He also leads the company's involvement with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine's Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine, and is a member of the School's Dean's Advisory Board.

As CEO and Chairman of the Board for HM Insurance Group, another diversified business, Chip guides the company's strategic vision to maintain status as one of the top five stop loss carriers nationally, realizing about $1B in revenue annually and saving $79 million in cost containment efforts in the last five years.

Prior to joining the Highmark Health Plan family, Chip worked for Coventry/Health America as president and CEO of plans in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Virginia. He has more than 30 years of experience in the health care and insurance industries, holds a master's degree from the Pennsylvania State University and has been a member of nearly 30 boards and associations during his career.
